Why More People Are “Going Postal”

By Saint Gabriels Newsroom / July 30, 2012

The recent killing spree in a Colorado movie theatre has experts again asking, “Why?” Frank Farley, a psychologist at Temple University and the past president of the American Psychological Association, has argued for a concerted effort to study what he calls the “heart of darkness” in humanity. I think Farley is on the right track.

The “heart of darkness” is rooted in original sin and in our turning away from God. It exists in all of us and has existed throughout humanity’s long history. So, why are senseless multiple killings by crazed individuals becoming more frequent?

Our Lady of Akita and the Mass

By Saint Gabriels Newsroom / July 9, 2012

This past year I have had the opportunity to read many books on Marian Apparitions, from the Middle ages, to the more recent in the late 70’s. These fascinating occurences have leaded me to a deeper understanding of Marys role in the Church, and in our lives.  The recurring message or theme I have found throughout many of the messages were of repentance, warnings of chastisement, and a return to personal holiness.  Most of the visitations of our Mother, were during times of upheavel, times when morality among people was lacking, and during times when the breakdown of common worship of God in our society.  Many people traded morality for their own depravities, and what they “feel” is right. Most of these situations involved warnings, and simple ways to correct our errors, so that God’s wrath may be averted. The call back to holiness was strongly emphasized and this should extend from the context of the Mass. I truly believe that there is a strong connection between the Mass and the various Marian apparitions. I will focus however on Our Lady of Akita because it is recent and is closely related to Our Lady of Fatima.

Let’s Talk About Hell

By Saint Gabriels Newsroom / July 3, 2012

The hardest Catholic teaching of all concerns hell. I do accept that teaching, but with difficulty and no small amount of doubt. We’ve all heard the argument: “If God is all loving, how can He permit hell?” A common Catholic reply is, “God sends no one to hell. People send themselves there.” Let’s look further into this mystery.
